Under the hood, Signal is all about security. You won't sacrifice usability or functionality to use Signal. It's positively zippy on the newer, and higher-powered, Nexus 6. The app is also very responsive. Even on the older Nexus 5, Signal is snappy. The iPhone version, notably, won't let you message anyone not in your Contacts list. Some features don't make it in, however, like the ability to add a new person to your Contacts list. Signal also includes basic messaging tools, like a tiled view of every photo in a conversation for easy access. It looks like any other modern, well-designed app on Google Play. Most security apps fall short in the design department, and I love that Signal hasn't followed suit. The design is very clean with splashes of color and material design flourishes. Secure and Good Looking at the Same Time Simply put, Signal looks and feels good to use. That way, your messages are secure even if someone tries to exfiltrate them from your phone. Your last steps in setting up Signal are to enable it as your default text message application, and to import your existing messages into Signal's encrypted archive. You'll definitely want to make sure you've locked your phone with a passcode and set up Android Device Manager to make sure no one steals your phone and impersonates you. Instead, the app authorizes your device by sending it a special text message. With Signal, there's none of that: no passwords to remember, and no accounts to be compromised. Most messaging services, even secure ones like Editors' Choice Wickr, require that you create an account first. There's no upselling, ads, or microtransactions.
